Djaawun is a digital artwork created using multiple programs and bird and nature sound recordings from Jiniabara-dja. This artwork has been digitally hand drawn inspired from an original acrylic artwork that was painted for the Horizon Festivals Medicinal Plants Exhibition at Mary Cairncross in 2026. The featured tree is the Sandpaper fig and the title Djaawun, which is a Jinibara word meaning ‘place, country, forest or breathing’. The artwork celebrates the forest and the significant cultural heritage of the sandpaper fig, medicine tree while also featuring appearances of possum, crow, pademelon and goanna tracks. The purple moonbeam butterfly and sandpaper fig wasp are also represented as having a special mutualistic relationship with the unique tree as well.

The artwork is designed to portray life, weather, seasons and time encapsulating the beauty and essence of what it took to create a forest and appreciate the significant cultural heritage that these forests have to us all.
