Artist Statement

Centric II is created as a six-piece modular work. Hung in this original square formation, the work reveals an inner intimate small centric square that creates a void to invoke the wall as its ground. The painting uses angular, linear relief devices to imply momentum and movement within the confines of the canvas and support, subtly probing the limits of itself as a painting. Utilising the white monochrome as a mode to encourage interplays of light, space and perception, the work further creates dualities and dialogues between 2D and 3D, and tones within the light and dark spectrum, to subverting the illusionistic internal gaze associated with painting. At its simplest core Centric II explores how the square is purported by Christine Herter in her book Dynamic Symmetry as the originating shape from which all other shapes are said to be derived, a foundation from which wider complexities can grow.
