Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan. Passing Through:Project Another Country

Husband and wife Filipino-Australian artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan are renowned throughout Australia and the Asia Pacific region for their projects which explore issues of community, migration and transience, reflecting their own diasporic existence.

The exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery will feature a selection of recent artworks by the Aquilizans, anchored by a new participatory project, in which members of the community, both children and adults, will be invited to make their own cardboard boat to contribute to a large installation that will form the centrepiece of the exhibition. The artists will facilitate a number of workshops to guide the development of the installation, with visitors to the gallery in between these scheduled workshops also able to make their own boats, which will be added to the installation as the exhibition progresses.

Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan migrated to Brisbane, Australia in 2006, following their participation in the 5th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT5), the artists also exhibited in APT3 in 1999. Their work has also been featured in the 2006 Biennale of Sydney, ‘Zones of Contact’, the Singapore Biennale, 2008 and the Venice Biennale, 2003. Their project ‘In-habit: Project Another Country’, exhibited at the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, Sydney in 2012 and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa Japan, travelled to venues throughout regional Queensland and New South Wales between 2013 and 2015.
