Third Drawer Down x Kaylene Whiskey
Kaylene Whiskey's art brings joy to the soul
Kaylene Whiskey grew up in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands in South Australia. In this remote context, she found inspiration in pop music and imagery, connecting with icons such as Tina Turner, Dolly Parton and Wonder Woman. In her practice, Whiskey brings the imagery of her youth to life with a playful take on nostalgia and empowerment, incorporating pop culture with her traditional Anangu culture and contemporary life in a remote desert community.
As a celebrated member of the Iwantja Arts collective, Whiskey is a prolific artist. She shares her graphic storytelling across canvas, installation, video, textiles and more. Whiskey's distinct style is immediately recognisable. She celebrates strong women in her artworks with a sense of joy and also references the culturally important story of the Seven Sisters. Whiskey's message is "have a good time but look after your sisters."
Whiskey is represented by the prestigious Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Sydney. She won the Sir John Sulman Prize in 2018 and has also been awarded a number of high-profile commissions. Her work is held in public collections nationally and internationally.
Whiskey has collaborated with Third Drawer Down to create a range of tea towels and mugs, available for purchase from the gallery store. The product range is made from high quality materials - the tea towels are 100% linen and the mugs are dishwasher safe fine bone china.
Third Drawer Down, which was founded in Melbourne in 2004, works with contemporary artists to create merchandise that both honours the artists' creative integrity and makes their work accessible to purchase and own. Their motto is "art to live with." Third Drawer Down prioritises women's stories, with 65% of their artist collections being with women artists.
