Pop-up exhibition: Third Drawer Down
Featuring Tony Albert, Kait James and Kaylene Whiskey | 20 June to 18 August
Third Drawer Down, founded by Abigail Crompton in Melbourne, 2003, collaborates with artists to reimagine their works into everyday objects – making great art accessible.
The Third Drawer Down studio project took the humble tea towel and reimagined it into a conduit for art, a project that continues today. The company has collaborated with more than 200 international artists since 2003 and has worked with the world’s most loved institutions.
The pop-up features three renowned First Nations artists from the Third Drawer Down product collection. Proud Wadawurrung woman, Kait James, whose works ask questions relating to identity, perception and our knowledge of Australia’s Indigenous communities. Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) artist, Kaylene Whiskey, who uses bright colours to render pop stars in flat pictorial space. She creates comic book-like worlds on her canvases that are instantly nostalgic and captivating. Tony Albert (Girramay, Yidindji and Kuku Yalanji) whose practice combines text, video, drawing, painting and three-dimensional objects. He examines the legacy of racial and cultural misrepresentation, particularly of Australia’s Aboriginal people.
Come and see this bold and bright collection in the Gallery Store during open hours. All pieces are available for purchase.
